DRGNFLY Studios
My own small studio, for trying things out.
A small independent studio I started to help businesses work smarter with the software they already have. It’s separate from my day job and from any employer.
A note on this piece
DRGNFLY Studios is a live, independent business.
01The reason
Why I started it
I spend my working days inside a large organisation, where feedback loops are long. DRGNFLY is the opposite: small enough that I can see the whole thing and do much of the work myself.
I wanted to understand what AI, automation and modern software really do for a business, and trying things is the only honest way I know to find out.
02Where the friction is
What I kept noticing
Most businesses lose time to the same small things: enquiries that slip through, leads nobody follows up, reports put together by hand, and tools that don’t talk to each other.
None of it needs a big programme. It mostly needs someone to look closely at how the work actually happens and take the friction out.
03In plain terms
What the studio does
It starts with the software a business already has. From there there are three ways of working: configure what exists, connect what’s separate, or create something tailored when nothing off the shelf will do. Custom builds, AI or a particular vendor only come up when they’re the right fit.
Not the loudest voice in the room. The most useful one.
04The way it’s built
How I go about it
Start with the problem, not a technology. Keep what matters and remove what doesn’t. Keep it understandable, so whoever uses it can see what was built and why. And leave people in control of what’s built for them.
These are the same instincts I use at work: understand the system first, pick the smallest thing that helps, and hand over something people can run.
05The connection
What it’s taught me about work
Building small is a quick, honest teacher. People using a thing matters more than features. Simplifying a process before automating it saves more than any tool. A first version in front of a real person beats a perfect plan.
Those lessons carry over to large organisations, where the same things are true but harder to see because the feedback loop is so long. Keeping a short loop of my own helps me think more clearly about the long one.
DRGNFLY is an independent venture. It’s separate from, and unrelated to, my responsibilities or any intellectual property at my employer.
